Borrowed from {{bor, en, fr, pistole}}, of uncertain origin. Probably ultimately from {{etyl, cs, en}} píšťala, gloss=whistle, from {{etyl, sla-pro, en}} *piščalь, from *piskati, *piščati, gloss=to squeak, whistle, from {{etyl, ine-bsl-pro, en}} *pīṣk-. Alternatively, perhaps from w:pistoia, pistoia (a city in tuscany).
